Cirque du Soleil LUZIA
Cirque du Soleil is returning to Atlanta with another breathtaking and jaw-dropping show. LUZIA has a cast of 44 artists from 15 different countries and is Cirque du Soleil’s 38th original production since 1984. Beginning September 14 through November 19, 2017, it will be under the iconic white and yellow tent at Atlantic Station. I’ve been to several Cirque du Soleil shows in Atlanta and Gwinnett, and each one is completely amazing in unique ways. Cirque du Soleil shows are full of imagination, breathtaking acts, talented cast and out-of-this-world storytelling.
Luzia is inspired by the richness of the Mexican culture. The name Luzia fuses the sound of luz and lluvia, two elements at the core of the show’s creation. LUZIA takes you to an imaginary Mexico where you’re waking in a dream. It’s a show that pulls you into a space between dream and reality. This show incorporates rain into the acrobatics, which is a first for the touring production. There will be hoop diving, water, trapeze acts, balancing stunts, contortionists and more!
Take a peek at the show’s trailer below:
Contributor (Becky Samford) recently went to see the show. Here are her thoughts
“All Cirque du Soleil shows are visual feasts and Luzia was no exception with brilliantly colored butterflies and hummingbirds, whimsical bugs, and xylophone playing crocodiles. An otherworldly water curtain, bathed in colored lights and filled with shifting images was the most dramatic and surprising feature. It was just one of the special effects that altered our reality and unleashed our imagination along with a harrowing parachute drop, a scuba dive with sharks, and some larger than life animals.
The level of talent and skill of the performers in this show was mind-boggling! The precision of the hoop divers was amazing, the beauty and skill of the pole dancers (whose abs are unbelievable!) and the sky-high hand balancer were very impressive, and the death-defying aerial tricks on the Russian Swings kept us all on the edge of our seats. I loved the “mad” skills of the soccer duo, the heart-stopping 360-degree giant swing and the exquisite Adagio dance by Kelly and Grzegorz. But for me, there were three stand-out favorite acts.
It’s hard to believe that twenty-two-year-old, Russian contortionist, Aleksei Goloborodko, has any bones in his body at all! His jaw-dropping flexibility comes not only from his genetics but also from years of intense training beginning when he was just four years old. Although he does some strength training, he said that his daily routine is mostly stretching and yoga. (In my yoga class, our poses look a little different than his!)
Rudolf Janecek can juggle faster than I can see! Throughout his whole act, I kept commenting that not only was he a fabulous juggler, but really, really fast. Well, I was right and it’s official! Rudolf scored Guinness World Record title of the “fastest juggler in the world” on Sept. 28, 2016. He achieved 429 rotations in 30 seconds with five clubs. This phenomenal juggler comes from a sixth-generation traditional circus family and started juggling when he was only five years old. His act was phenomenal!
But, my favorite was the Aerial Strap act. A cenote, deep in the jungle, was flooded with blue light and surrounded by hanging vines. A tiger came to the edge for a drink as Benjamin began his intimate dance with air and water, which was part “Olympic Ring” athleticism, part ballet, and entirely mesmerizing. It’s hands down one of the most beautiful scenes I ever witnessed… I absolutely loved it!
LUZIA is a riot of color and laughter and dance, but also of beauty and romance. Cirque du Soleil outdoes itself as it cleverly brings the multiple places, faces and sounds of Mexico to Atlanta, tied together by Latin rhythms and the haunting voice of Majo Cornejo. It’s a magical, mystical ride that will leave you breathless and begging for more. Don’t you dare miss it!!”
