Inspired by a hot flash and a bottle of wine, Menopause The Musical® is a groundbreaking celebration of women who are on the brink of, in the middle of, or have survived “The Change.” Now in its fourteenth year of production, Menopause The Musical® has evolved as a “grassroots” movement of women who deal with life adjustments after 40 by embracing each other and the road ahead.
But don’t think for one second that this show is only for older women. I saw this show several years ago, being nowhere near menopausal age with a similarly aged friend, and my older neighbor who was going through “the change”, and we three equally found it funny and entertaining. It’s also a show for the men in our lives to understand “the change” without being fearful or confused. According to one of the lead actresses, Ingrid Cole who plays “Earth Mother”, the men in the audience love the show! So as you’re buying your tickets, don’t forget to get an extra one for your spouses or boyfriends too.
Set in a department store, four women meet while shopping for a black lace bra at a lingerie sale. After noticing unmistakable similarities among one another, the cast jokes about their woeful hot flashes, mood swings, wrinkles, weight gain and much more. These women form a sisterhood and unique bond with the entire audience as they rejoice in celebrating that menopause is no longer “The Silent Passage.”
It’s been said, Laughter is the best medicine and although there’s no cure for menopause, humor and love makes it easier to endure. Ingrid Cole (aka Earth Mother) states that the show is as therapeutic as it is empowering and entertaining. She goes on to say that the audience comes up after the show, thanking the cast, sharing their personal experiences and commenting how the characters are relatable and so much like themselves or someone they know. She also says this show helps the audience celebrate the change instead of crying about it. And they celebrate it all together. Ingrid says the audience is the 5th woman or character in the show. and they may come in not knowing anyone just like the strangers in the store but in the end, they will leave feeling like they all know each other.
The laughter-filled 90-minute production gets audience members out of their seats and singing along to parodies from classic pop songs of the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s. Funny enough, Ingrid, who has been performing as Earth Mother in Menopause the Musical since 2005, shared that her daughter, who grew up in the theatre world, would sing all the parodies perfectly, but had no clue what the real lyrics were!
Ingrid finds it an honor to be a part of the show for so long. She was one of the original Atlanta cast members over a decade ago! She feels very lucky to be a part of this family and attributes it to the audience and the love and appreciation she gets for her role. Although she has travelled extensively while performing, she loves performing here in Atlanta. She knows the crew, the area, the theatre and at the end of the show she gets to go home, and not to a hotel. She also gets an opportunity to perform in front of friends and family. As a staff singer at the Peachtree Presbyterian Church in Buckhead, she hopes to see new and familiar faces.
She’s very similar to her character “Earth Mother”, in that she’s nurturing, hippy, funny, down to earth, and real because of her struggles. One way she differs is that she is not a vegetarian. But she’s eating very healthy right now and on most days you can find her at the Dekalb’s Farmer’s Market. (Hint: I just gave you a way to ensure a celebrity sighting!) Ingrid had done tv, film & print work as well as plays and musicals. She is a professional singer. She sang her first solo at the age of 8. Musicals are where her heart and passion is. Not only is she a Suzi Bass Award Winner for Best Leading Actress in a Musical, she has recently written and starred in her own show, “Cole sings Cole”, a celebration of the songs of Cole Porter. Her love of Cole Porter’s music was developed as a young child listening to her father’s soundtracks.
